Proclamation

Whereas: Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits discrimination
against women in education; and

Whereas: Title IX has had a profound impact on helping to change attitudes, and to
increase opportunities; and

Whereas: Title IX enables girls and women in Athens and across America to make
the most of their abilities as they dream big dreams, and work to achieve those dreams; and

Whereas: Our city and the nation are increasingly reaping the rewards of women's
talents, accomplishments, and perspectives; and

Whereas: by ensuring equal opportunities for women and girls, we ensure a
brighter future for all Americans; and

Whereas: 2007 is the 35th Anniversary Year of the Title IX of the Education
Amendments of 1972

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Richard Abel, Mayor of the City of Athens, Ohio, do
hereby proclaim the week of April 28-May 5, 2007, as:

Celebrate Equity Week

In the City of Athens, Ohio and request that all residents of the city join in
recognizing the anniversary of this landmark civil rights law.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have subscribed my name and
caused the seal of the City of Athens to be affixed this
28th day of April, in the year of our lord, Two-Thousand
and Seven.
